Big Book

Hurtling through physical space to my door is the latest translation of Tolstoy’s War and Peace.

I’ve never read it before, and I don’t plan to start any time in the next month or two, but I’m glad to have it. It’s sort of famous. It’s 1296 pages of Russiany goodness.

And this translation is supposed to be a good one. As I’ve said before, translation is everything. This one is supposed to be true to Tolstoy, with lots of notes explaining all the junk I wouldn’t understand without help.

Meanwhile, in other War and Peace news, for the first time ever, there’s a translation of Tolstoy’s first edition, originally published in a Russian lit magazine, before he reworked it and almost doubled its size.
