Freedom of Speech vs. Religion

Remember when those cartoons in Europe spawned a bunch of death threats and street protests from radical Muslims? And the good guys were saying, hey, don’t touch our freedom of speech.

A new book about the movie, “The Last Temptation of Christ” is out. It reminds me that there were protests and death threats from Christians fighting against freedom of speech not too long ago.

That was about a movie imagining Christ imagining having a different life. What if he’d married and had kids? Pretty tame, I think, but it was enough to get scary for some of those involved.

(And of course, THE JEWS got blamed for a screenplay written by a Christian, directed by another Christian, based on a book written by a third Christian.)

Of course The Jews got blamed—you know They run Hollywood (and the banking industry, the newspapers, etc.). That punctuation looks odd.

There’s a central problem with free speech, freedom of/from religion, and probably a great number of other sensitive issues. People want to hold their own dogmas sacred while profaning those of others. I should be free to publicly demonize your gods (they’re illusory anyway), but keep your filthy hands off mine.

In the movie Bubble Boy, Pushpop is a Hindu, distraught by the mutilation of a cow. Jimmy tries to soothe him:

Jimmy: “It’s alright Pushpop, your religion is all lies.”

LOL. Hindus get the short end of the stick some times. I like the Simpsons bit about “Christians, Jews, and miscellaneous” “Hey, there are 900,000,000 of us you know”.
