Perez Hilton, Politics, and Whining

miss usa in all her amazing splendor and glory

I don’t exactly follow the Miss USA contest, and I don’t care about its results.

So that’s one thing I don’t care about. I also don’t care about Perez Hilton (I don’t even want to link to his little blog of celebrity snark).

But… the mixture of the two things has gotten my attention, and maybe yours as well. I have to admit that I only know about it from this article, so I may be missing important elements of the story.

So. I believe that gays should be allowed to get married. I believe that as strongly as I believe anything. I’m totally, 100% committed to that idea.

Perez Hilton (an openly gay judge of the event) asked Miss California, in the middle of the battle to be Miss USA, whether she agrees with weeklyrob about gay marriage. And she basically said: Nope.

And furor and madness arose, and she didn’t win. Who knows whether she WOULD have won. Of course, all the people who agree with her think she’s a star from the heavens.

What I don’t understand is this comment from Hilton:

Miss California should have “left her politics and her religion out because Miss USA represents all Americans.”

Am I missing something here? He ASKS her opinion and then slams her for giving it? How do you answer the question without bringing in your politics or religion?

Am I wrong that HE brought politics (and maybe religion) into the fray? It was him, right? Then she responded truthfully. Am I wrong?

And, I mean, all Americans? That’s what bothers him? ‘Cause lots of Americans agree with her, and not with him and me. Do you really have to agree with all Americans about every subject in order to be Miss USA?

I’m so confused.

You have to remember that Miss USA does *not* in fact represent all Americans. She only represents that tiny percentage who have any idea who Miss USA is, and further who care about her politics.

FWIW, I’d never heard of Perez Hilton before your post. Seeing the name, I thought it was either a spoof of Our Favorite Flasher or some bad S. American ripoff. Maybe he wanted her to use that line from Pulp Fiction. “I don’t even have an opinion.”

It’s surprising to me that Hilton would expect this barbie doll to be liberal. As much as gays love them, pageants aren’t exactly the most progressive of institutions.

Maybe, for Hilton, it was like finding out your favorite sports star is an asshole.

I think the whole concept of beauty pageants are silly (though I found the news coverage that included scenes from the swimsuit competition to be an excellent tool for promoting good health and exercise!).

That said, if the people running this competition, and the sponsors want competitors to be “Politically Correct,” they should have put that requirement into the rules. This young lady and others like her could then have done something else with their time since they would not have been eligible for the pageant. If political correctness was not a requirement, i.e., not in the rules, this young lady should not have lost for her lack of it. She should have been judged on the appropriate, “attributes.”

Bob, I couldn’t agree more. To be clear, as far as I know, no official has stated that she lost because of that answer.

Perez Hilton is a great American who understands something that you obviously don’t: if she had answered correctly it would have been an entirely proper display of American values. Since she agreed with our President, however, it was a shameless injection of ignorant politics into an otherwise uplifting celebration of high culture.

He probably posted a picture of her on his website with a hand drawn penis in her mouth, thus settling the argument once and for all.
