I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know that they weren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t allowed to before, but they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve caught up with the other Armed Forces in allowing it now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph Body\" style=\"line-height: 17px; text-decoration: none\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph Body\" style=\"line-height: 17px\">Mind you, the rules don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t simply say that yarmulkes are allowed. And they don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t say that any religious headgear is allowed. There are restrictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph Body\" style=\"line-height: 17px; text-decoration: none\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph Body\" style=\"line-height: 17px\">For example, allowable religious headgear must fit under a hat. This seems reasonable, since a hat is part of the uniform of a person in the Coast Guard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph Body\" style=\"line-height: 17px; text-decoration: none\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph Body\" style=\"line-height: 17px\">But this rule will obviously exclude a turban, or a headscarf. Which is why it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rarely a good idea to make broad statements about religious rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph Body\" style=\"line-height: 17px; text-decoration: none\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph Body\" style=\"line-height: 17px; padding-bottom: 0pt\">That is, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rarely a good idea to say, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153No one should ever have to choose between honoring their religion and keeping their job, especially our servicemen and women.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Which is what John Kerry said about the yarmulke case.
