If you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re concerned about adware and pop-ups on the Internet, it may be time to move from concerned to scared.<\/p>\n
Julie Amero is facing up to 40 years in prison for exposing her 7th grade class to a barrage of porn pop-ups. (<\/span>Link<\/a>) The charge is \u00e2\u20ac\u0153impairing the morals of a child.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/span><\/p>\n It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a shame for her that she didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t just unplug the computer, but I deal with the less-than-savvy-on-computers all the time, and a lot of people wouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think of what to do.<\/p>\n It does seem clear that she didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t intend for anyone else to see the pics. But anyway, as PZ Meyers says on Pharyngula (<\/span>Link<\/a>), it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not as though your typical 7th grader is really going to be damaged by glimpsing a naked body on an Web site. If I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d had the Internet at that age, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d have seen everything they had. There were no morals to be damaged. <\/span><\/p>\n As it was, I had no Internet, so instead my buddies and I took every chance we could to look at nudie mags. Big deal.<\/p>\n The other thing is that even the prosecution apparently doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t claim that she intended for the kids to see anything. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153One student claimed Amero \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcphysically reached up and pushed his face away from her computer,\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 when she noticed him looking at the computer screen….\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (<\/span>Link<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n But it doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t matter what she intended. I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know whether she was surfing porn or not, but we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve all been subject to tons of unstoppable pop-ups. The fact that she wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t able to stop it, and that therefore some kids saw it, isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t worth 40 years in prison.<\/p>\n She probably won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get that much, though. Sentencing isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t until March, and I have a feeling she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll get off lighter than she could. But still.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m always wary of newspaper and blog accounts of legal battles. I wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t in the courtroom (much less the classroom), and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m probably ignorant of lots of the details. I know that a witness for the defense was a computer expert who says that the adware started a barrage of pop-ups from a hair stylist Web site.<\/p>\n But there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a lot I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know.
