{"id":355,"date":"2008-06-03T21:20:35","date_gmt":"2008-06-04T02:20:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/weeklyrob.com\/?p=355"},"modified":"2008-06-03T21:20:35","modified_gmt":"2008-06-04T02:20:35","slug":"giddyup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/weeklyrob.com\/?p=355","title":{"rendered":"Giddyup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every once in a while, someone will mention &#8220;the teamsters,&#8221; and I&#8217;ll wonder&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>How did they come to be called &#8220;teamsters&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, as I read a bit of the early section of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loa.org\/volume.jsp?RequestID=46\">U.S. Grant&#8217;s memoirs<\/a>, I get to a point where he says, &#8220;&#8230; it is not probable that any of the men who reported themselves as competent teamsters had ever driven a mule-team in their lives&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ta da! It all becomes clear. People who drove teams of horses or other animals (usually for hauling long distances, I assume) were teamsters.<\/p>\n<p>There are still long hauls, and although the teams have gone, the teamsters remain.<\/p>\n<p>[Incidentally, this book also has Grant&#8217;s letters.
