Sound familiar?<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; line-height: 20px\" class=\"paragraph Body\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0802132863\/104-3560953-8543957\" style=\"font-weight: normal; line-height: 20px; font-family: 'Verdana', 'sans-serif'; opacity: 1.00\" title=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0802132863\/104-3560953-8543957\">Israel\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Secret Wars<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #000000; line-height: 20px; font-family: 'Verdana', 'sans-serif'; opacity: 1.00\">, about Mossad, IDF Intelligence, Shin Bet, and the rest, is an amazing look into the kinds of stuff that intelligence services do (of course, this is just the operations that come to light).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0px; color: #000000; line-height: 20px; font-family: 'Verdana', 'sans-serif'; opacity: 1.00\" class=\"paragraph Body\">Israeli leadership wanted to invade southern Lebanon (for several security and strategic reasons). According to the book, the US would only politically support an Israeli invasion of Lebanon if the PLO in Beirut (Arafat) broke a previously signed cease-fire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0px; color: #000000; line-height: 20px; font-family: 'Verdana', 'sans-serif'; opacity: 1.00\" class=\"paragraph Body\">Soon enough, Israel\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ambassador to England was murdered by a Palestinian outside a hotel in London. Israeli intelligence found that the murderer wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t part of Arafat\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s PLO at all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0px; color: #000000; line-height: 20px; font-family: 'Verdana', 'sans-serif'; opacity: 1.00\" class=\"paragraph Body\">But Israeli leadership didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t care. They wanted in to Lebanon, and in they went. The authors say, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The intelligence facts were being selectively marshalled to suit the grand political and military design.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; line-height: 20px\" class=\"paragraph Body\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #000000; line-height: 20px; font-family: 'Verdana', 'sans-serif'; opacity: 1.00\">This is exactly the charge leveled at the Bush administration by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foreignaffairs.org\/20060301faessay85202\/paul-r-pillar\/intelligence-policy-and-the-war-in-iraq.html\" style=\"font-weight: normal; line-height: 20px; font-family: 'Verdana', 'sans-serif'; opacity: 1.00\" title=\"http:\/\/www.foreignaffairs.org\/20060301faessay85202\/paul-r-pillar\/intelligence-policy-and-the-war-in-iraq.html\">Paul Pillar<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #000000; line-height: 20px; font-family: 'Verdana', 'sans-serif'; opacity: 1.00\">, who should know. History is great.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0px; color: #000000; line-height: 20px; font-family: 'Verdana', 'sans-serif'; opacity: 1.00\" class=\"paragraph Body\">[One thing Israel didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have the cynicism to do in Lebanon, which the Bush administration does, is to to blame the intelligence community for its own failings. Yes, the intelligence was wrong about whether there were WMD, but it also said that regardless of WMDs, Iraq wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t a threat to the US. Guess which part of that message the hawks in DC decided to believe?<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; line-height: 20px\" class=\"paragraph Body\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #000000; line-height: 20px; font-family: 'Verdana', 'sans-serif'; opacity: 1.00\">And now that it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s all gone to hell? Guess which part of that message they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve decided to blame for their mistakes?
