Shocking Truth

I’m as surprised as you are, but I returned the Sony Reader and asked for my money back.

Amazing but true.

In other news, I’ve just started reading “The Mighty and the Almighty,” by Madeleine Albright. Regardless of her politics, I think we can all agree that she’s smart, that she’s thought a lot about the international relations, and that she’s had some personal experience with how policies and negotiations work in the real world.

I remember reading SOMEthing in college (and if anyone can tell me the details, I’d appreciate it) that illustrated what reading can do for you in the following way:

A book can be like a portal that brings you into a conversation with (or at least a lecture from) the greatest minds of the past and present. It’s like a little square through which those Greats can talk to you. And although most people end up chatting instead with the uneducated and ignorant people around them, we all share the possibility of hearing from the true geniuses.

I’m not sure that Albright is a genius, of course, but the possibility of getting her take on this subject (the role of religion in international relations) shouldn’t be undervalued.

[I’ve also read, and liked, Kissinger’s book, “Diplomacy,” so I shouldn’t be accused of cherry-picking, based on politics, which brains I seek!]

I’ll let you know how it is.

Well, did you return the Sony Reader because it wasn’t worth the money, or because you just didn’t like it? If it’s a question of whether it’s worth the money, but you actually would like to have it, you can apply for Sony’s credit card and they’ll sell you the reader and $149 worth of eBooks for $49.

I hate having extra credit cards, but you can always cancel it later.

As far as Ms. Albright: She’s led a pretty amazing life, even separate from her years as a diplomat. She’s definitely worth hearing from, even if I think she’s a loon.

I returned it because it wasn’t worth the money, when I consider how much money I don’t make.

So I applied for one of their crappy credit cards. Which will sit in a drawer, and will be canceled as soon as I have my reader.
