Two great uses for the Internet.
1. meetup.com : This is a site dedicated to getting people to meet up and do stuff that they like to do.
For example, do you like, or have an interest in science, BBQ, sewing, reading, blues, cycling, Spanish, or formula one racing? Are you a homesick Aussie expat, or a just-learning bowling wannabe? Do you enjoy the works of Marx or Rand?
Or… do you have any other interests? If so, then there’s probably a meetup group you can join. The idea is that you join a group, which then meets up to do the thing everyone in the group joined to do.
I joined a Flag Football group in April last year, and have missed every single game since then. But the idea is still a good one, and if I didn’t have a toddler (or some other excuse), I’d have been getting exercise and meeting people practically every week.
2. Science Cafes! (U.S. Version) (UK version) (The World): Meet scientists in a bar or cafe, and chat with them about the work they do. No lectures.
It’s about putting science into layman’s terms, and talking in an informal environment that encourages questions and conversation. Anyone at any level of knowledge is encouraged to come.
I just found out about this today (from Seed Magazine), so I haven’t attended the one in Atlanta yet. But I will soon!
[Note that “The World” version seems to include the U.S., but isn’t up-to-date. So if you’re in the U.S., go to the U.S. Version.]
