Pissed

I have a friend who was robbed at gunpoint last year, a couple of friends who narrowly escaped a mugging a week ago, and another couple of friends who moved out of the city because they were sick of the crime.

So this is small potatoes and non-violent, but it hurts.

I was strolling down the street with my baby, when I saw a discarded and empty Amazon.com box lying in the grass. I hate litterers, so I flipped the box over to read the addressee. If it was someone nearby, I was going to deposit the box on his or her doorstep.

Imagine my surprise to find my own name on the box. After consulting with my wife, and checking the tracking number, we now know that someone else is walking around with my Father’s Day present.

Bastards.

Update: We just figured out that another package was taken at the same time. That one was a gift for a friend who just had a baby. I hate people.

    This.

What bothers me so much is the diminishing sense of community and neighborliness. For four years, we’ve told UPS to leave boxes sitting at our front door, and I guess I enjoyed feeling as though people respected each other here. So that’s the part that hurts. Amazon is sending out a new CD, for free and next-day air. It’s not the merchandise.

It’s a terrible feeling when you realize you’ve been robbed. Sorry that it happened.
