Kottke.org points us to the front page of the print edition of The Independent. As he points out, you could list the countries in much less space. But this image sure leaves an impression.
Note that I’m not talking about politics in this post. Just about a striking way to present information.
A display of “what countries have been attacked by Al Quaida or other Muslim terrorist groups in the last few years” would look quite similar.
I do have to concede that it’s a stunning graphical way to make a point. Paging Tufte!
Yeah, I’m not making any kind of political statement. I’m just impressed by the way they made theirs.
Indeed, I took it that way.
And I seriously do tip my hat to them – it was a stunningly clever display.
Yep, great use of graphics.
And they’re still wrong.
At least until they put up a graphic showing which countries have acted to stop Hezbollah from randomly killing civilian Israelis. Or one showing which countries have done anything to return the kidnapped soldiers.
Also, no one seems to comment on the fact that while Israel gets slaughtered in the press for an accidental attack on civilians, that’s Hezbollah’s primary goal.
It’s very, very simple. If Israel melted down every weapon, it would cease to exist the next day. If Hezbollah melted down every weapon, this crisis never would’ve happened.
All of that said, Israel has made some very bad errors over the years. This just isn’t one of them.
I realize you weren’t making a political statement, Rob, but I’ve had these thoughts bottled up, and this is a good place to vent them. 🙂
Sorry – one more thought.
How about a graphic showing which countries have taken action to disarm Hezbollah. Wasn’t there already a UN resolution requiring that?
Or a graphic showing who sincerely believes that ceasefire will solve the long-term problem of Hezbollah operating with impunity in southern Lebanon?
Why should Israel believe the UN will do anything about Hezbollah this time around?
I truly, truly hope I’m wrong.
