So it’s here!
Today the sun appears to drift directly over the equator. The day is roughly as long as the night in both the southern and northern hemispheres. And after today, until late June, each day in the Northern hemisphere will be a little longer than the previous day. (In the Southern hemisphere: Darkness approacheth.)
Hurray for spring!
According to some people, today is the best day to balance an egg standing up. Of course, this is ridiculous.
We tested this in high-school physics. On the Equinox, Mr. Gibson had us trying to balance eggs on a counter. Most of us were, in fact, able to balance our eggs. Fast forward a bit (month? can’t recall) and Mr. Gibson had again brought in eggs and had us try to balance them. No problem. On Christmas Eve, at precisely 1400GMT, you can balance a raw egg on its end. Unfortunately, we still had that embarrassing moment at the planetarium.
